For me, the gym grind gets boring– fast. I love exercising and staying fit, but I like to have fun while doing it. I don’t really find a gym routine fun or motivating like some people do, I’d much rather be hiking, jogging, doing yoga, or participating in some kind of guided class. That’s why when Vixen Army Newfoundland reached out to us to collaborate, I was instantly intrigued.
Vixen Army is a dance fitness franchise that originally started in Miami. It’s all about getting sweaty and feeling fierce! I participated in a one-hour beginner’s class at The Space in St. John’s. I didn’t know what to expect really, except that I’d be dancing. Although I was assured beforehand that my awkwardness and lack of coordination wouldn’t be an issue– Vixen Army is all about positive body image and self-love, so there wouldn’t be any judgment if I couldn’t get some of the moves. I was told that I’d be feeling like Beyoncé by the end of the hour!
When it came time for the class, I was instantly excited by the colored lights, studio-style dance space, and friendly ladies who greeted me. Everyone faces the mirror in the front of the studio, the awesome instructor runs through a few of the basic moves, and you jump right in. The choreography is not overly complicated, but the fast-paced music means you have to be paying attention! I was a little off-beat at first but I started to catch on in no time. I really liked how I felt like I was in sync with the other dancers, but nobody was watching me because we were all focused on our own movement (and how hot we looked!!)
What I loved most about the class was that it made me feel like I had at least some rhythm, some ability to dance, but most importantly, I felt confident! Nobody was called out for missing a step or falling behind because that is not what it’s about– it’s about having fun and getting active. Speaking of that, holy crap, did I ever sweat! I knew I was headed to a fitness class but I did not expect to get in such a workout. It got my heart rate up and my legs BURNING.
Overall, Vixen Army is a great class to participate in if you love to dance, you love hip-hop tunes, or want to shake up your fitness routine. Try your first class free so you can try it out without a big commitment!
