Confidence, girl power, and an amazing jewelry line – we’re so excited to introduce our newest trailblazer: Rebecca Lapointe! She’s a super creative and inspiring human being from Nova Scotia.
Check out our interview with her below:
Name: Rebecca LaPointe
Hometown: Truro, Nova Scotia
Favourite Travel Destination: My lake with my family in the middle of the woods in Country Harbor, Nova Scotia
TWT: How did Beck & Boosh start?
RL: I had been an Elementary teacher in Alberta, then Korea, then Nova Scotia for over a decade when a neighbor moved in next door to me in 2013 with a basement full of jewelry she had brought back from India. Once we had started to get to know each other we decided we would set up a website and start selling the jewelry at festivals around the Atlantic provinces to spread the brand. Looking back it’s funny to think how easy we thought that would be but we just went with it, worked our butts off and within a year we were wholesaling our handmade as well as our curated pieces across the country. That’s when I had to decide between teaching and selling jewelry full-time especially since I also had 1 and 3-year-old boys! So with the support of my amazing husband, I decided to take the risk and left my life as a teacher to become an entrepreneur. After the second year, my business partner decided to move on so I bought the business from her and I opened up a storefront in Truro, Nova Scotia in November 2015. Since then my team and I have been running the store, wholesaling to the most amazing boutiques and stores across Canada and also have our website where we ship orders across the continent every day!
TWT: What inspired you to design and produce jewelry?
RL: I’ve always loved fashion and jewelry and accessories and using my creativity to show through in what I am wearing. Both of my grandmothers loved jewelry( it is from them that I get the inspiration for our Modern Vintage Collection ). My mom is very into fashion as well and always encouraged me to have fun with my own sense of style. Just knowing how adding that one piece of jewelry that I absolutely love and feel amazing in can make a difference in my confidence and the way I feel starting my day made me want to offer that feeling to other women. And by doing that with costume jewelry women don’t have to feel guilty about spending a little bit on themselves for a change!
TWT: Why is it important for you to keep the East Coast roots of the company?
RL: Even though I’ve lived in many places all over the world as well as traveled all over the world there really is no place like home and wherever I’ve been I’ve always longed for the time when I would be back home again. This is what the East Coast is to me. The people here are the best people in the world, the friendliest and the most supportive. The atmosphere, the landscapes and just the overall feel of the East Coast is like nowhere else. This feeling has been a driving force behind my company in every interaction I have with my customers, every relationship I build with other female entrepreneurs that sell my jewelry and every piece that I design or curate each new season. Every package of Beck & Boosh jewelry that we ship out to our customers has a handwritten note to let them know how much we appreciate their support and hope that when they wear their Beck & Boosh piece it will help them feel confident and beautiful. Every email, message or comment on our social media that we get from a customer is answered. Our customers are the most important part of what we do every day and I think that human aspect of the business comes from our East Coast roots!
TWT: Do you have a favourite quote or words to live by?
RL: From a business perspective: If you’re going to be a successful business owner you have to be prepared to be 50% excited out of your mind and 50% scared s#%×-less because if you’re only excited then you’re not realistic and if you’re only scared then it’s not worth it! From a personal perspective: We all make mistakes so as long as we make a point to learn from them then they will make us better people.
TWT: What’s next for Beck & Boosh? Are there any dreams, goals, and plans you can share?
RL: Spreading our brand as far as we can is our ultimate goal to bring together a group of like-minded women who are all what we call ‘Booshes’. A Boosh being a strong confident woman who is kind to themselves and empowers others. The more we spread this self-awareness around I feel the better we can be to ourselves and other women. We need to support each other, build each other up and encourage each other to be ok with feeling amazing about ourselves. We have just recently started selling in one location in the states and will continue to work together with even more female entrepreneurs across the continent.
TWT: How can we continue to empower each other & encourage women to let their light shine?
RL: I believe empowerment comes from kindness. First of all kindness to ourselves. If we truly love ourselves and work on not putting ourselves down and not judging ourselves then we will be more confident and happy and brave enough to let our own uniqueness show. Secondly to be kind to others and not be so judgmental.
TWT: Can you talk a little bit about the “be YOUnique project”? Why is it so important to you?
RL: Our Be Unique Project is all about letting the voice of women be heard. It is about telling our stories in a confident, strong way, without a feeling of being judged, to help other women realize they are not alone. We want to encourage women to embrace their uniqueness and celebrate it in an unapologetic way.
We also highlight different women each week on our media for ‘Woman Crush Wednesday’ (#WCW). We do this not only to help the chosen women realize how valued and loved she is but also to spread the word about all of the amazingly strong women we have in our communities and to celebrate and support each other.
