Winter is right around the corner. The season of icy windshields, short daylight hours, and bulky boots. Whether we want Winter to come or not, we may as well embrace it and enjoy it to the fullest, ’cause it’s coming anyway. Here are ten reasons to get excited about Winter:
Skiing. Or snowboarding, if that’s what you’re into! Personally, I prefer skis, but any activity that gets me on the slopes is perfect. I love the heart-pumping adrenaline rush you get from whistling down a mountain or carving back and forth through fresh powder. Whether you’re travelling to another province or country or staying right at home to ski, the thrill is still there. Check out our Marble Mountain skiing adventure for more!
Snowshoeing. You all know by now that here at twowildtides, we love to hike. In the Winter, this gets a little more difficult, so we break out the snowshoes and get a new perspective on some of our favourite trails. Snowshoeing is great because the resistance from the snow makes you work just a little bit harder, giving you a more beneficial workout. You can snowshoe just about anywhere, but make sure you’re aware of the terrain. Be careful near ice and open water, and stay away from steep cliffs. Snow days. A classic. What is better than waking up in the morning to a raging blizzard, hearing that work and school are cancelled and you can lie in bed all day to read, watch Netflix, or even get caught up on life. Make pancakes (recipe here!), drink tea, and relax. We want to encourage you to enjoy your snow days to the fullest, but also be grateful that you have the privilege to enjoy a snow day from the warmth and comfort of your home. For many, snowstorms can be life-threatening if they lack shelter or electricity. On a snow day, consider making a donation to your local homelessness fund, or if you can, head out and volunteer at a shelter or food kitchen.
Cozy getaways. Winter is the perfect season to rent a little cabin, cottage, or chalet and escape for a day or two. Curl around the fire with a mug of hot cocoa or a glass of wine and play board games all day with your loved ones. Spend some time really getting to know someone. Or run away by yourself if you’re feeling creative, inspired, or need to recoup. We highly recommend Oceanstone Seaside Resort for your Winter retreat. Read about Linds’ experience here!
Ice skating. One of our favourite things about Winter is outdoor skating rinks (but indoor works too!). In St. John’s, we have the Bannerman Park Skating Loop where you can glide around and enjoy some delicious Beaver Tails, and in Halifax, we have the popular Emera Oval. Day or night, this is such a fun and festive activity to make the best of Winter. Check out our Winter Survival Guide from last year for more details on skating.
Hot beverages. Winter is the season for the best teas, ciders, lattes, hot chocolates, and more. Find our delicious, healthy hot cocoa recipe here. More whipped cream, please!
Hockey games. I’m not a sports fan whatsoever, but even I love to head out to the rink to watch a game of hockey in the wintertime. There is something about the energy in a live sports arena that just gets me so excited! Whether it’s your local team or the pros, definitely add a hockey game to your Winter bucket list. Unfortunately St. John’s doesn’t have a hockey team right now, but we hope the Ice Caps will be back next year!
The days are already getting longer. My LEAST favourite thing about Winter is how short the days are. So I take comfort in the fact that the deeper we get into the Winter months, the longer the days are becoming. Remember Spring is right around the corner 😉
We want to know your favourite things about Winter!! Comment on this post or reach out to us on social media, @twowildtides. Thank you for reading, and we hope you enjoy all the season has to offer. If anything, Winter is a time to refresh and renew. Enjoy the crisp whiteness and the brisk cold and let it cleanse your soul. Don’t forget to breathe. Have fun.
