I know this book has been around a while now, and the hype is pretty much over. I was real late getting on the bandwagon with this one (as I am most things!), but #GIRLBOSS by Sophia Amoruso is still relevant and probably always will be.
What I loved so much about this book— besides Sophia’s endless sass and her cute sketches— is that it actually makes you want to get off your butt and do something worthwhile. #GIRLBOSS inspires you to go after what you love and not stop until you’ve achieved your goals and gone beyond your wildest dreams.
Sophia is honest, though, and I admire that. She does not make you think that turning your hobby or entrepreneurial idea into a multi-million dollar company is easy or just good luck. Sophia makes it clear that you will have to invest every waking hour and every ounce of energy that you can conjure up. Success does not just happen to you. Success is something you earn through countless days and nights of hard work.
We love Sophia’s spunk. Her energy, her comedic and carefree personality, her dedication, her use of language, and her history. This is why you need to read this book right now. She takes a rather unusual approach at motivating you to get out there and get shit done, but it works. This book has exactly what is needed to educate you and inspire you to be a #GIRLBOSS.
However, our dear readers: at twowildtides we encourage a balanced lifestyle. We believe in whole meals, regular exercise, and a good night’s sleep in order to achieve wellbeing and to be the best that you can be. This might sound so boring compared to Sophia’s stories of sleepless nights and unlimited Starbucks half-caf, no foam, soy Caramel Macchiatos. Maybe I have no room to say this because I am not the CEO of my own international corporation, but I just encourage you to make time for yourself on your way to the top. Play hard and work harder, but always make time for self-care and do not put your mental or physical health at risk.
And I should probably mention the Netflix show. You may know by now that it has been cancelled after the first season. I briefly read somewhere that Sophia, who was the executive producer of the show, was not pleased with the direction the show took. After I finished the book, I watched the series in one weekend. While it was pretty spot-on to the events in the book and very enjoyable to watch (and it was hilarious!), it didn’t have the same impact that the book did. While the book made me want to get out and conquer, the show made me want to, well, keep watching Netflix all day.
To make a long story short: read this book. Take Sophia’s tips and lessons to heart then go be a #GIRLBOSS. Whether this means starting your own business, getting through school, getting a promotion, or just getting through a workout, you got this. Give it your all and you will rule the world, but don’t lose your self or your health along the way.
xoxo,
char
