Hey everybody! I was shopping at Winners the other day and as usual, swung by the food shelf because they always have yummy and unique healthy treats. On this day, I saw a package of banana flour, which was something I hadn’t heard of before. It was only $5.99 so I decided to pick it up. Why not?!
Turns out banana flour is not only good because it is gluten free, it also has a ton of health benefits. It is a resistant starch, which is a special kind of probiotic that promotes good gut health. I am no expert, so learn more on bananaflour.com!
I tested out a couple different recipes using the banana flour and the results are below. Enjoy!
Brownies
These brownies tasted heavenly! They are perfect for satisfying a sweet tooth. The texture, however, wasn’t great. They were pretty dry and chalky which made them hard to enjoy on their own so I used them up by crumbling them over my oatmeal and smoothie bowls. Since they are gluten free and not unhealthy in any respect, I would recommend giving them a go! Find the recipe from ThankYourBody here.
Pancakes
These pancakes were deadly! One thing I noticed though, is that they had the similar chalky texture to the brownies, so it really may have something to do with the banana flour. Considering banana flour is made from green bananas, and they have that same chalky feeling when you eat them, it would make sense. You should definitely try this recipe from Natural Evolution Foods and top them with almond butter and honey like I did— so yummy! My one piece of advice would be to pour the batter, let it cook for a second, and then pour a little more to make them fluffier since the batter is kind of runny.
Mug Cake
I decided to try a recipe that wasn’t originally a banana flour recipe, just to see how well it acted as a substitute for other types of flour. This strawberry mug cake was really tasty, moist (maybe a little too moist!), and satisfying. A perfect healthy snack or dessert that takes minutes to make! The banana flour definitely transitioned well into this recipe by Physical Kitchness.
I was very surprised that banana flour does not have a banana flavor at all. It tastes just like ordinary wheat flour, so you can basically substitute it in any recipe! If you decide to try some of these recipes or want to try other recipes using banana flour, but don’t know where to find it, you can order the same brand that I found in Winners here and order it right to your door!
