Here at twowildtides, we are always up for trying new things. Recently, I heard about a Mexican root vegetable known for its distinctive apple-like taste, so of course I had to see what the fuss was about.
What are the health benefits of the jicama? According to OrganicFacts.net, the jicama is rich in dietary fiber, vitamin C, potassium, and many other vital minerals and vitamins. This means it is great for digestion, bone health, brain health, and the immune and metabolic systems.
I watched a quick YouTube video to see how to best cut this veggie up and got to work. It was surprisingly easy to peel and slice, even for my dull knives. The whole process took about 5 minutes. The smell is definitely of root vegetable and based off of the smell alone, you wouldn’t guess that it has such a nice flavor.
I have got to say, that the jicama lives up to the hype (for me, anyways). I can best describe the taste as a cross between turnip and apple, but not nearly as sweet as an apple. Since the taste is a little on the bland side, the potential for enjoying jicama are endless. The flavor goes with pretty much anything!
How can you enjoy jicama? This morning, I tried it topped with almond butter and granola. Tonight, I added it to a chicken and veggie dish (catch the recipe soon on NaturallyHayleigh.com!). So far I have eaten it plain like you would a carrot or celery stick, dipped in chocolate sauce, and added to a fruit smoothie. There are recipes across the Internet for spiced jicama chips and fries. I imagine it would also be delicious in soup!
