After a well-deserved week off over Easter, I was feeling pretty rejuvenated. My mind was clear and my body rested. I was, however, feeling pretty bloated after a whole week of comfort food and Easter chocolate (no regrets). Once I returned to the city and back into a normal routine, I decided my body needed a detox.
Here at twowildtides, we support a healthy, balanced diet full of good fats, protein, and nutrients. We also support occasional indulgences and not restricting ourselves too much. Life is meant to be enjoyed, right? We do not believe in unhealthy fad diets. My detox approach was pretty simple: eat light, yet nutritious and energizing meals for one whole week. No refined sugars, no gluten, and no dairy. Although I try to avoid these things for the most part anyway, I have not eliminated them from my overall diet entirely.
So Sunday evening, I headed off to the grocery store on a mission. Here’s what I picked up:
- 3 bags of frozen berries (cherries, strawberries, bananas and mixed berries, all free of refined sugar)
- baby spinach
- 3 avocados
- 2 mangos
- blackberries
- blueberries
- pineapple
- 2 figs
- 1 passionfruit
- bananas
- vanilla bean coconut ice cream (vegan and refined sugar-free)
- fresh mint
- 2 cucumbers
- medjool dates
- unsweetened almond milk
In my cupboard, I already had: almond butter, cinnamon, cocoa powder, vanilla, chia seeds, matcha powder, rolled oats, lemon juice, and honey.
Here are the types of smoothies I drank:
Chocolate Banana Smoothie
1 and a half frozen bananas
almond milk
a big spoonful of almond butter
1 tbsp cocoa powder
a dash of vanilla
a hint of cinnamon
a handful of chia seeds
Tropical Green Smoothie
1/2 a large cucumber
4 mint leaves
heaping handful of spinach
chunked pineapple
half a mango
1 avocado
a dash of vanilla
a dollop of honey
Strawberry Peach Smoothie
a handful of frozen strawberries
1 pre-chopped frozen peach
a handful of spinach
almond milk
half an avocado
chia seeds
a dollop of honey
‘Date Square’ Smoothie
a handful of spinach
half an avocado
a handful of blackberries
half a bag of frozen strawberries
three pitted medjool dates
1/2 cup GF rolled oats
1/4 cup hemp hearts
Matcha ‘Milkshake’ Smoothie
a handful of spinach
2 cups vanilla bean coconut ice cream (dairy-free)
1/2 tbsp matcha powder
a small squeeze of lemon juice (to activate the matcha powder)
a splash of almond milk
I made many of these smoothies in advance and stored them in mason jars in my fridge. I drank them as they were or made them into smoothie bowls and topped them with coconut chips or fresh fig or whatever else I was in the mood for that day. I had smoothies for breakfast and supper and ate a light, fresh lunch each day. Some lunch meals I enjoyed were salads, salmon, boiled eggs, rice paper wraps, and avocado chickpea salad.
All of these smoothies feature fruits and veggies, a form of protein, and some type of antioxidant. They will fill you up and nourish your body. By the end of the week, I was feeling far less bloated. My digestion had improved and my gut felt relieved. I even noticed my skin was clearer!
Although I am going to maintain a clean diet (with indulgences!), I am not continuing to drink so many smoothies as meal replacements. Your body needs solid food.
